Every person who stays or volunteers with us contributes to a shared experience — one built on respect, openness, and curiosity. Depending on whether you are volunteering or simply staying at our hostel, there are a few things we ask from you. Don’t worry — they’re simple, respectful, and mostly common sense.

We all come from different backgrounds — and that’s what makes our place special. Because we live together, share food, and spend time under one roof, it’s important to be mindful of others and of the Nepali culture around us. You don’t have to know every custom or tradition — just be aware, observant, and open to learning. You can find a good introduction here: Cultural Understanding.
Our goal is not to set rules but to help you connect — with locals, neighbours, and fellow guests. You are living in a real Nepali neighbourhood, not a tourist district, and small gestures of respect go a long way. That’s how genuine exchange and friendship begin.

Requirements for Staying at Our Hostel
We don’t believe in strict house rules — we believe in mutual respect. Still, to make sure everyone feels comfortable and our Nepali neighbours are not disturbed, please keep these few guidelines in mind:
- Respect other guests and local families living in the same building.
- Smoking inside the rooms is not allowed. You can smoke on the rooftop — just keep it clean and use the ashtray provided.
- Drinking a beer on the rooftop is fine, but please avoid excessive alcohol and clean up afterwards.
- No drugs of any kind.
- If you want to bring someone from outside, please ask us first — for everyone’s comfort and safety.
- Use water wisely. Showers are fine every day, but please keep them short — water in Kathmandu is precious.
- Lock your room when you go out.
- Dress modestly in public and around the neighbourhood (avoid short skirts or deep-cut tops).
- Try to return before it’s fully dark. The area is safe, but street lighting is limited — a small torch can be helpful.
- Let us know if you skip breakfast or dinner, so we can plan meals accordingly.
- Inform us if you’ll be home late. The main gate is usually locked around 9–10 pm.

Requirements for Volunteering with Our Organisation
Volunteering with PVN is a responsibility — to yourself, to the people you’ll meet, and to the projects you’ll support. We want your time here to be meaningful, effective, and respectful. That’s why a few basic requirements help ensure both you and our project partners benefit from the experience.
- You should have a good level of English to communicate with local staff and other volunteers.
- Be aware of Nepal’s socio-economic and cultural background. We provide a Free Orientation Course to help you understand this context.
- If you volunteer in a school, fluent English is required.
- You should have some experience or training in the field you want to work in — e.g., teaching experience if you want to teach.
- Have a clear idea of how you want to contribute. We’re here to guide you, but your motivation matters most.
- Some projects require a minimum stay — for example, at least one month for teaching projects.
- Understand and support The Principles Behind Responsible Volunteering.
We’ll find the right project together — through honest communication and mutual understanding.
