Our accommodation in Kathmandu – the rooms
We have rented a flat in a three storeyed building including a roof top. The ground and the first floor are occupied by two nice Nepalese families, the second floor is ours and the third floor belongs to the house owner. The rooftop is for all of us accessible. There are in total 3 bedrooms, 1 community/dining room, 1 kitchen, 1 bathroom and 1 storeroom in our flat.
The bedrooms.
Two of the three bedrooms will be offered to our guests. In each of the two rooms are two single beds, a shelf and a bedside cabinet. Our bedrooms are quiet big and due to the many windows very bright. Every bedroom can be locked. You can either carry the key with you or leave it at the hostel. Depending whether there is a spare room available or not, you might have to share a room. The beds are very traditional and definitely harder than you are used to. But no worries, you will get used to it very quickly.
The community/dining room.
In the community room breakfast and dinner will be served and eaten together. Traditionally, you will sit on the ground. Cushions will make it more comfortable for you. Having breakfast and dinner together strengthens the house community. Experiences of the day will be exchanged and new plans for the next days will be made. Usually people gather around in our community room when they are at home. You can see it as our small living room where we sit together rather than being on your own in the bedroom.
The kitchen.
You can use the kitchen if you want to prepare something for yourself. Please bear in mind that the equipment is a little different to yours at home. Our stove runs by gas, therefore you have to use the gas lighter to turn it on. If you need help, you can always ask Rajeev or Vishal. There is also a water dispenser in the kitchen offering you freshly filtered drinking water. Basic household devices (kettle, microwave, fridge) can be used at any time. When your meals are being prepared, you can always join Rajeev and Vishal in the kitchen. They are more than happy to teach you how to cook delicious Nepali food.
The bathroom.
We have a western-style bathroom including a toilet, a basin and a shower. Due to the solar panels installed on the roof top, hot water for the shower is available. If the solar panels do not provide hot water, there is also a geaser that runs by electricity which we can turn on for you if needed. Nevertheless, we would like to request you not to waste water excessively. Especially in Kathmandu, water is very precious. Therefore, please use the water economically. We have some buckets in the bathroom that should always be refilled with water in case of a scarcity of water.
The rooftop.
If you need to wash your clothes, you can do it up there. On a beautiful day the rooftop is a great place to be on. You have a wonderful view over the colourful roofs of Kathmandu, you can see the airport and the belt of hills around the valley. And if the sky is crystal clear, you might also see the Himalayas from our place.
The storeroom. If you have chosen our accommodation as a basis for your travels through Nepal or for a trek you can also put your luggage into our storeroom. The storeroom can be locked as well.
Our accommodation in Kathmandu – a place you feel home
Living in a hostel like a homestay.
We live together and we share the same food and sometimes you need to share the room. It is very important to us to encourage the interaction between people and create a solidarity and a community feeling at our home. We know that there will be days where you might feel sick, sad, lost, melancholic, unmotivated, stressed out, angry, helpless or even full of despair, and that is why we want to make sure that you have a group of great people around you to comfort you and to help you whenever you need them.

Location.
We have decided to establish our accommodation in Kathmandu not at the heart of tourist destination, Thamel, but in an area where our guests can learn more about the everyday life of a Nepalese middle-class family. Of course, it is more easy to adjust in Thamel due to the many Westerners and the fancy restaurants and bars. But Thamel does not represent Nepal. We assume that our guests are interested to get to know true Nepalese culture, traditions and customs. And if you indeed are, we think that we might have a perfect place for you to stay.
